Community Involvement

I grew up with a father that had Polio which made it quite evident to me that he was unable to participate in the areas of my life that my friends fathers were able to.  Just going playing catch in the yard was a chore for him – one he still happily accepted.   As a result of this, over my lifetime, I develop an affinity to supporting the special needs community whenever possible.

When I was introduced to the Best Buddies program I was amazed at the dedication of our young people in committing high-school years  to befriend a student with intellectual and developmental disabilities.   These young people help provide a life inclusion versus exclusion by developing a one-on-one friendship with these students – becoming their “Buddy”.   I have heard the stories from a couple of the “Buddies” that they have received much more than any of the time that they gave.

I feel honored to be involved with this program.

Best Buddies is the world’s largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical and economic isolation of the 200 million people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD.)  The program helps people with IDD form meaningful friendships with their peers, secure successful jobs, live independently, improve public speaking, self-advocacy and communication skills, and feel valued by society.

The Best Buddies program takes place throughout the local schools with chapters in school districts throughout the area.  They match students with and without disabilities together in one-to-one friendships, and in doing so, the results are greater understanding and respect within the schools.

We’ve seen this program help decrease bullying, and it also leads to greater confidence in the students with disabilities that will ultimately help them in the workforce as well.

Best Buddies hosts several events throughout the year, including the Best Buddies “Bet on Friendships” event which will take place this year on Friday, October 23rd at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach.  This casino themed event is expected to have over 300 attendees and will feature casino games, hors d’ouevres, cocktails and a live and silent auction.  Most importantly, guests will learn more about the mission of Best Buddies and the impact it is having on the local community.

Please contact me  if your interest in attending or hosting a table or if you wish to learn more about this amazing program.
